DJ Dziri (Souk Sessions / notyourtechno / BE)
Known for her genre-bending approach, DJ Dziri takes the audience on a trip through the unexpected, going from the deeper side of minimal techno and acid house to mesmerizing Middle Eastern & North African sounds.
DJ and producer, DJ Dziri rose in a few years as one of the names defining the Brussel’s electronic underground scene. Born in Antwerp, she grew up in a Belgo-Tunisian family and first got interested in music exploring the whole richness of her multicultural identity. As a woman of mixed background, DJ Dziri translates her struggle and own identity to her music, telling a bit of herself in her sets, tracks and each of the projects she unleashed on Belgium’s capital city.
It is in Toronto, on the decks of her own parties that she revealed herself in 2016. Hooked on the avant-gardist fusions of electronic music and North-African heritage, DJ Dziri launches her own party concept: Souk Sessions. She will later move the party as she travels back to her native country and establishes herself in Brussels. Two racing years will follow as the artist refines her technique and draws attention from her peers. Observed by the local scene, she is included in Kiosk Radio’s roster as a resident.
With the release of her first EP ‘Glimpse of An Eye’, 2019 marks a decisive year in DJ Dziri’s career, where she sets her mark as a music producer in addition to dj’ing. She reveals a music born out of her own wanderings, between strength and sensitivy, and offers her own interpretation of Arabic-influenced electronic music. With acid synths, dark rhythms of her TR-909, percussions, melodies and vocals she brings the listener to a getaway, but also to the exploration of one’s own contradictions.
Parallel to the hours spent in her home-studio, DJ Dziri is multipliying several prestigious bookings lately. After sharing the decks with legends such as Ellen Alien and Juan Atkins at Boiler Room, the young Belgo-Tunisian has been noticed by the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, played at Nuits Sonores Bruxelles and most importantly at the Amsterdam Dance Event. Motivated by this dynamic, DJ Dziri also announced Not Your Techno – her new femme and queer party series pushing forward emerging electronic talent in Brussels and beyond.
